An-ger

By Jeremy D. Joy

“My dear brothers and sisters, always be willing to listen and slow to speak. Do not become angry easily, because anger will not help you live the right kind of life God wants” (James 1:19-20 NCV).

There are two Greek words for anger: thumos and orge. The first version of anger motivates us to discipline a child because of misbehavior or write a letter to Congress because of a moral issue. The second version is unhealthy and dangerous. It seeps into the soul and stays in the heart where wrongs are rehearsed and revenge is planned. It is a killer both physically and spiritually. It is no surprise that anger is becoming a public health risk.

We should pray: “God, forgive me for the sinful anger in my life. Give me the courage to face my wounds, forgive those who have hurt me, and live free of the destructive anger that has been in my life. I ask it in Your name. Amen.”
