Dis-ci-ple

By Jeremy D. Joy

“If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32 NASB).

You became a Christian because you believed. You heard that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for the sins of the world. It never meant much to you, but something changed and you started to understand that He died for your sins. You realized that if you acknowledged what you believed, Jesus would radically transform your life. You later learned the impact of your decision and started to follow Jesus as a true disciple—someone who is devoted to a teacher or a body of truth and accepts discipline toward the goal of conforming to the teacher or the body of truth. Disciple and discipline are related concepts. We must welcome the discipline of God as He chisels us through trials and tests into the image of Jesus—the ultimate goal of discipleship.
