The Spiritual Value Of Private Devotions

By Jeremy D. Joy

You may worship in the public assemblies of the church, but do you worship in private? The practice of private devotions is not Denominational or Pentecostal. Isaac “went out to meditate in the field in the evening” (Genesis 24:63) and Daniel prayed three times daily “as was his custom” (Daniel 6:10). Jesus sought solitary places to pray in the morning and evening (Mark 1:35; Luke 6:12) and He taught His disciples to pray in secret (Matthew 6:6). If private devotions helped men of faith such as Isaac and Daniel, not to mention the Son of God, why not engage in private devotions? It will enhance our relationship with God including our public worship.

Why Have Private Devotions

We draw near to God. God has promised to draw near to us if we draw near to Him. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). Do you want a closer walk with God?

We receive spiritual nourishment. Just as we need daily physical nourishment we also need daily spiritual nourishment. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Do you want a stronger spiritual life?

We find peace and stability. We live in a world filled with worry and anxiety, but prayer is the remedy we need. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Do you want inner peace and outer stability?

More than ever, in a world that is hostile to our faith, we need to draw near to God, to receive spiritual nourishment, and to find peace and stability. The habit of private devotions can help us and our families.

How To Have Private Devotions

Find a time and place. It may be in the morning before the day starts or it may be in the night after the day ends. It may be inside or outside. The point is to find a time and place that is best for you in order to focus on the spiritual. Use the time to pray, meditate, and even sing or listen to recorded hymns that lead your heart and soul in praise to God. Talk to God through prayer and listen to Him through His word. The result will be a less stressful and more spiritual life!
